Our complexions face (excuse the pun!) many challenges as we reach menopause – sagging skin, the arrival of age spots, downy hair, rosacea and redness, fine lines and wrinkles. However you can still look AND feel amazing with our top makeup tips for mature skin!
While ageing happens to us all, it can be a challenge to find the right products, and adapt our makeup routine to suit.
As a makeup artist of many years’ experience, here are my top tips to help your mature skin positively glow – both with, and without makeup!
4 Makeup Tips for Mature Skin
1 – Prep your skin with hydrating products and liquid collagen. I highly recommend using a hydrating primer, moisturiser and eye crème every day – like our super hydrating Perfect 10 Primer Serum. Not only is it designed to deeply hydrate your skin, it can also reduce excess oils (if that’s a problem for you) and shrink pores to create a seamless ‘canvas’ for your foundation.
One of the most important steps in your skincare routine is to use a gentle exfoliator every couple of days, to increase cell turnover and remove dead skin. No sugar scrubs!
And who doesn’t want a more youthful looking complexion? Using a vegan liquid collagen serum every night under your moisturiser is one of the fastest (and least invasive!) ways to more toned, firmer skin.
2 – Less is more. Growing older is something we should all embrace, not feel we have to hide. And while makeup can be wonderful for helping us look and feel our best – packing on too much of it can actually make us look older than we are.
When it comes to foundation, avoid caking on thick layers and instead choose one that is described as ‘illuminating’, ‘luminous’ or ‘dewy’ as these are more lightweight and designed to bring out the best in mature skin. Our Hydrawear Liquid foundation for example, gives 12 hours of hydration!
3 – Brows on fleek. If you’ve lived through the over-plucking of the 80’s and 90’s, chances are you’re wanting to fill out those brows – but if you’ve hit menopause, a waterproof brow product is essential! Our brow pomade is ideal – apply with a brow brush using small, flicking motions, in the direction of your hair growth, rather than single, heavy-handed strikes.
Also, don’t overextend the tail of your brows as this can create a ‘droopy’ effect. To measure where they should end, place a pencil diagonally at your nostril and line it up with the outside of your eye. Where the pencil hits your brow bone is the sweet spot. Beautifully shaped and groomed eyebrows create a perfect frame for your face, and draw attention to your eyes.
4 – Upgrade your eyeliner. If you’re noticing that dramatic kohl black eyeliner and wings are no longer serving your mature skin, you can soften the look with more subtle colours like brown, navy or plum – or try using our brow pomade as a safe, gentle, vegan and waterproof eyeliner.
I also suggest staying away from lining the bottom of the eye, as it can collect in the creases and make your eye appear smaller. Instead, apply a splash of mascara on the lower lashes to accentuate the eyes, and finish off your look.
